Pope Francis passed away peacefully on Monday morning (April 21, 2025) from an unexpected stroke, as confirmed by his doctor, Sergio Alfieri.
The stroke occurred suddenly, and there was nothing doctors could have done to save him; he was in a coma upon the doctor’s arrival.
Alfieri reported that Pope Francis was alert shortly before his death, with no respiratory issues present at that time.
At 88 years old, Pope Francis had recently fought double pneumonia but had appeared well just the day before, greeting crowds in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday.
